What is a keloid scar?

A keloid scar occurs when the healing process is abnormal. Collagen fibers are produced in excess, which increases the size and thickness of the scar. It is supposed to be smooth and flexible, but it becomes hard, puffy and fibrous and may extend beyond the injured area. Keloid scars are more common in people with black or Asian skin.

What is a hypertrophic scar?

A hypertrophic scar is similar to a keloid scar, but it develops differently. Unlike a keloid scar, a hypertrophic scar does not extend beyond the scar area. A hypertrophic scar regresses after several months, while a keloid scar can continue to evolve for years.

What scars are there after a breast reduction, breast augmentation or breast lift?

After a breast surgery, scars are usually the same. There may be a circular scar around the nipple and/or a vertical scar from the nipple down to the fold under the breast. A third horizontal scar can be found at the level of the fold under the breast, in this case we talk about inverted T or sea anchor scars.

What is an atrophic scar?

What cream should I use on a scar after an operation?

How to protect a recent scar from the sun?

For proper healing, it is important not to expose the scar to the sun. It is therefore advisable to cover it completely with a garment or a suitable bandage. It is also important to use a good sun protection with a high sun protection factor.
