What is Sculptra?
Sculptra is a revitalizing injectable aesthetic medicine treatment based on polylactic acid, a synthetic collagen-inducing polymer.
Approved by the FDA (the high authority in the United States that authorizes the marketing of drugs and medical devices), Sculptra is biocompatible and fully resorbable, ensuring its safety.
Collagen gives skin its structure and helps maintain its shape, hydration and elasticity. Its progressive loss every year leads to skin aging (loss of volume, skin depressions, skin sagging, wrinkles).
Sculptra intervenes at this level by activating the skin's natural ability to produce collagen to give it a younger appearance. The collagen stimulation provided by Sculptra will rebuild andstrengthen the skin’s structures to restore lost volume, firmness and thickness.
Who can benefit from the Sculptra treatment?
Sculptra is indicated for people who want to fill in wrinkles and hollows, reshape facial contours, and restore volume following the loss of fat mass.
This treatment is mainly used on the middle and lower thirds of the face for:
- Loss of volume,
- Skin depressions (wrinkles, fine lines, scars),
- Nasolabial folds,
- bitterness folds,
- Chin wrinkles,
- sagging skin.
However, Sculptra is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women, for people under 18 years of age, or in case of inflammation, skin infection, history of hypertrophic and keloid scars or hypersensitivity to any of the products contained in Sculptra.
What happens during the session?
The Sculptra injection session takes place at the Global Medical Institute clinic in Lausanne with Dr. Pietramaggiori or Dr. Scherer on a face that has been cleansed of makeup.
The injection technique and the quantity of product injected are adapted to each case for a customized treatment. Injections are performed in the deep layers of the dermis in order to restore volume to the depressed areas.
Injections are not very painful, but a local anesthetic can be used to guarantee maximum comfort throughout the session.
The clinic's expert doctors will take care to avoid any over-correction, so they prefer to perform a minimal first injection, even if it means renewing the injections a few weeks later if the correction is not sufficient. This guarantees the most natural result.
In general, 3 sessions of injections are necessary, spread over a period of 3 to 4 months.
What are the after effects of the Sculptra treatment?
The Sculptra treatment involves certain transient side effects that are not serious, such as hematoma, bruising, edema, inflammation, redness, nodule formation or minimal bleeding. They last a few hours, or even a week in some cases.
Social eviction is not necessary, and activities can be resumed immediately at the end of the session.
After the injections, Drs. Pietramaggiori and Scherer advise you to massage the treated area several times a day for a few minutes. This allows for an even distribution of the product.
You should also reduce your exposure to the sun and UV rays until the redness and swelling disappear. Also remember to use a 50+ sunscreen to protect your skin.
What results can I expect?
Results are visible after a few months, while new collagen cells form.
Studies have shown a 66.5% increase in type 1 collagen within 3 months of treatment. It is this type of collagen that will give the skin a more youthful appearance.
By rebuilding and strengthening the skin's structures, the new collagen produced will restore lost volume, strengthen the skin's firmness and thickness, and give it back its fullness as well as an even complexion. The expected results are a natural and global rejuvenation of the facial skin.
The effects of the treatment last up to 2 years, and sometimes even up to 25 months.
