Frequently asked questions about blepharoplasty
What is the price of a blepharoplasty?
The price of a blepharoplasty varies depending on the procedure performed. It can be a lower blepharoplasty, an upper blepharoplasty or both at the same time. In all cases, the cost of the procedure starts at 4 500 CHF.
What are the results of a blepharoplasty?
Eyelid surgery corrects sagging skin and removes fatty hernias. The eyes are rejuvenated and awakened. The results are among the longest lasting in cosmetic surgery, the bags under the eyes do not reappear, but the skin of the eyelids will continue to age naturally and the skin of the eyelid may sag again, but if it does, it will not be for at least ten years.
How is a blepharoplasty performed?
Blepharoplasty is performed under local or general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. For the treatment of the upper eyelids, incisions are made in the crease halfway up the eyelid to remove excess skin, fat bags and to tighten the muscles.
For the treatment of the lower eyelids, incisions are made under the eyelashes or inside the eyelid to remove fat and any excess skin.
The incisions are stitched with very fine, non-absorbable sutures that are removed a few days after the procedure.
At what age can a blepharoplasty be performed?
There is no specific age at which a blepharoplasty can be performed, even if it is generally around 40 years old that the first signs of aging begin to appear in the eyes. However, some eyelid disorders, such as bags under the eyes, can be hereditary and appear in patients who are much younger, in which case a blepharoplasty can be considered.
Can a blepharoplasty be performed without surgery?
In the case of bags under the eyes, surgery is the only way to remove them. In the case of upper eyelid correction, there are non-surgical alternatives. The most effective is PLEXR (plasma exeresis) technology, which will reduce excess skin by means of a retraction effect using plasma energy. Injections of hyaluronic acid or botulinum toxin are also possible in cases of slight sagging of the eyelid. By raising the tail of the eyebrow, these products will also allow the eyelid to be raised moderately. These non-surgical techniques are only effective in the case of minor sagging of the eyelid.
What are the risks of a blepharoplasty?
Although complications are extremely rare, as with any surgical procedure, risks do exist and must be taken into account. Hematomas can occur, generally without gravity, infection, although this is exceptional, very rare healing anomalies, epidermal cysts that eliminate themselves or very easily, tear secretion disorders, ptosis, the impossibility of completely closing the upper eyelid for a few weeks, retraction towards the front of the lower eyelid, or exceptional cases of double vision or ocular hypertension.
Can blepharoplasty reduce slanted eyes?
Asian blepharoplasty aims at creating a palpebral fold on the eyelids, allowing to enlarge the eyes. It is also called eyelid debridement or westernization of the eyes.
Is blepharoplasty covered by Social Security?
Blepharoplasty can be covered by the Social Security when it aims to remove a functional discomfort. The cases concerned are upper eyelids obstructing the visual field, drooping eyelids due to a relaxation of the lifter muscle or a lower eyelid that has become slack, allowing the white eye to be seen.
How long does it take to see the final results?
To truly appreciate the final result of a blepharoplasty, it is advisable to wait between 3 and 6 months, the time it takes for the scars to fade and for the tissues to become supple again.
What scars after a blepharoplasty?
In the case of upper eyelid surgery, scars are hidden in the furrow of the upper eyelid, between its fixed and mobile parts. They are therefore hardly visible.
In the case of lower eyelid surgery, scars are under the eyelashes which will therefore hide them. If there is no excess skin to be removed to treat pockets of fat, a trans-conjunctival incision can be made, i.e., inside the eyelid, so there will be no visible scar on the skin.
What is the postoperative care?
A lubricating cream should be applied to the eyelids, as well as eye drops to moisturize. Your surgeon will explain to you how to clean your eyes properly.
How long does it take for the swelling to disappear?
After a blepharoplasty, it is normal to see swelling appear in the operated area. Their duration varies greatly from one person to another, and they deflate after 6 to 20 days depending on the case.
Why do the eyelids droop?
Drooping eyelids are due to ptosis, which is an attack on the lifter muscle of the eyelids. Ptosis can be congenital and present from birth or be caused by genetic pathologies, neuromuscular diseases, eye surgery or age. The eyelids can also fall out due to aging and sagging of the tissues, not related to the muscles.
What is the origin of bags under the eyes?
Several factors can cause bags under the eyes. They can be due to water retention problems or simply to the aging of the face, which causes a displacement of the fat that surrounds the eye. Genetics is also sometimes responsible for bags under the eyes, some people are predisposed to have them.
When can I start wearing eye makeup after a blepharoplasty?
As a general rule, eye make-up is possible again one week after the operation, while the healing process takes place.
