What is otoplasty?

Ear surgery or otoplasty aims to give a more harmonious shape to the ear. This procedure can correct abnormalities of the ear cartilage, protruding ears, positioning and/or proportions of the ears.

Indications

Otoplasty can restore a natural and harmonious shape to the ears. If you have ears that are malformed, protruding, or if their size is not harmonious with your face, or then again if they bother you, otoplasty can most likely help you. Otoplasty can be performed once the ear has reached a specified size.

During the first appointment, the doctor will evaluate the solution adapted to your needs.

A healthy lifestyle, a healthy diet and quitting smoking at least one month before the procedure will contribute to a smooth procedure and a good recovery.

Otoplasty: the procedure

Otoplasty is a procedure that takes about 30 minutes. It is performed under local anesthesia. The incisions are often made on the back of the ears. If the incisions are to be made on the front of the ear, the doctor makes sure that they are made at the level of the natural folds so as to conceal scars. At Global Plastic, we use a new technique called "Earfold®" that allows for a less invasive procedure when treating ear deformities.

Post-operative period

The procedure is ambulatory.

If the procedure was performed exclusively with the Earfold® implant, you will be able to resume your activities the next day and will not need to wear a bandage.

Otherwise, you may need a bandage that will be placed around your head and remain for 7 to 10 days. A bandage will be placed around the ear and will stay there for the same amount of time.

Finally, a lighter bandage, similar to the ones used for sports, will have to be left in place for a period of 2 weeks day and night and 4 additional weeks at night only.

A slight discomfort or itchingmay occur in the weeks following the procedure. This is completely normal and temporary.

Results

After otoplasty, you will see results immediately, and the result will be even better once you remove the bandage supporting the ear. During the healing period, your ear will be a little swollen and probably bruised. They will disappear in a short time. You will then see a stable and lasting result.

With the new "Earfold®" technology, results can be seen quite accurately before the procedure thanks to a simulation performed during the appointment. The results following an Earfold® implant are immediately stable and long-lasting.

Risks

During your appointment, the doctor will explain all the possible risks and complicationsrelated to this procedure, even though they are rare. Only after discussing the risks with the doctor will have all the information you need to make your decision.
