What is a breast lift?

A breast lift, also called mastopexy or breast lift, is a plastic surgery procedure. This surgical procedurerestores a harmonious shape and curves to the breasts by correcting breast ptosis.

Breast ptosis is a sagging of the breasts. The breast tissue sags and forms a fold that hides the submammary fold. By doing the pencil test (a pencil placed in this area does not fall out), you can verify that ptosis is present and that the breast lift is right for you. How long does the procedure last?

The duration of the procedure varies depending on the patient's goals and needs. It lasts approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the patient's request and the technique used. At Global Plastic Surgery, the surgical procedure is performed by two surgeons specializing in plastic surgery, so the time is divided by two.

How the procedure is performed

Once the patient is asleep, the plastic surgeonmakes an incision, repositions the areola and nipple, lifts the mammary gland, reshapes the breast and eventually removes the excess skin.

What scars?

Depending on the degree of breast sagging, the doctor will either make an incisionaround thenipple (“peri-areolar”), or an incision around the nipple down to the crease under the breast (“vertical”), or an incision around the nipple down to the crease of the breast following this crease ("inverted T" scar).

Do I need to take time off work?

Generally, there is little pain following this procedure. However, a leave of absence from work is necessary and depends on your job. It is generally necessary to expect about a one-week social eviction.

In the month following the operation, it is recommended not to carry heavy loads, not to do any sport that could stress the pectoral muscles.

What are the after-effects of the operation?

Generally, there is little pain following this procedure. There may be some breastsswelling and bruising, but also some discomfort when you lift your arm.

It is advisable to wear a sports bra without underwire during the first month, day and night. This precaution will help to maintain the breast even, in a stable position. The resumption of sports activities can be considered after about 1.5 - 2 months.

Are results durable?

Yes, the result is long-lasting. However, the skin may stretch again in case of pregnancy, weight gain and aging.

It is recommended that you moisturize your skin considerably to guarantee a better result. Indeed, this area of the skin, which is subject to gravity, is very thin and fragile.

We advise against sun exposure, as this accelerates the aging of the skin.

What are the possible risks?

As with any surgical procedure, breast reduction involves risks that may be related to the anesthesia or the surgical procedure. At Global Plastic Surgery, we make every effort to ensure that the risks are as minimal as possible. We therefore take all necessary precautions.

However, this procedure is subject to the repair reaction of the skin tissue, a living tissue whose reactions are never completely predictable.

Some complications, although rare, can occur

An infection or a hematoma that requires antibiotic treatment and possibly a surgical revision are very rare complications.

Even more rarely, damage to an area of the skin, gland or areola can delay healing (note this risk is increased if you smoke).

It is therefore strongly recommended to stop smoking 1 month before the operation and in the month that follows.

Procedure and details of the operation
The day of the operation:

You arrive in the morning, on an empty stomach, you are received by the surgeon who will operate on you and you are taken to the operating room. When you are asleep, the plastic surgeon begins the procedure.

To perform a breast lift, the skin is cut around the nipple. Excess skin is removed, the mammary gland and internal tissues are reshaped and the nipple is lifted (mastopexy). Depending on the initial situation, the breast lift may be combined with a breast augmentation or reduction. The procedure takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
