What is lipofilling?
Lipofilling, also called liposculpture or lipomodelling, is a plastic surgery technique that aims to restore volume to certain parts of the body through the injection of fat. Fat is taken from various areas of the patient's body (stomach, hips, buttocks, flanks, knees). This fat is then purified and reinjected into the parts of the body where volume is to be restored. Since it is the patient's own fat, the risk of rejection by the body is considerably reduced.
The indications
Lipofilling is a technique used in both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. It is most often used for breast augmentation, for breast reconstruction following a mastectomy (removal of the breast) or for skin generation following radiotherapy.
It is important you keep your expectations clear and realistic regarding the desired result.
A healthy lifestyle, a healthy diet, and quitting smoking at least one month before the procedure will contribute to a smooth procedure and a good recovery.
Lipofilling: the procedure
Lipofilling is performed under local or general anesthesia. The doctor locates the areas with excess fat. The fat is then removed by liposuction and purified using a centrifuge. Once the fat is purified, it is recovered and injected in the desired location.
Post-operative period
The procedure is ambulatory and does not require any time off work.
After the operation, you may experience quite bearable pain that can be treated with medication. It is possible that bruises may appear after the operation. They will disappear spontaneously.
Results
There is no visible scarring. Results are immediate in the areas where the fat has been removed. The area treated by lipofilling is completely disinflamed after 2 to 3 weeks. It will take about 3 months to see the final result, because part of the injected fat is resorbed by the body.
Results are long-lasting.
Imperfections
A lack of fat can be corrected during a second operation, whereas a surplus of fat is definitive. For this reason, there is a tendency to inject less fat, and imperfections may result.
An accumulation of liquid under the skin may occur. This can be drained by means of punctures.
Risks
Although complications are rare, an infection may occur, as in any surgical procedure. Sensitivity problems in the treated area may also occur. They are slight and temporary.
During your appointment, the doctor will explain all the possible risks and complications related to this procedure, even though they are rare. It is only after talking with the doctor that you will have all the elements to make your decision.
Contraindications
You may not be offered this procedure if you do not have sufficient fat reserves, which is rare.
