Tummy Tuck (abdominoplasty), Body lift
A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is an operation that removes excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen in order to obtain a flatter smoother contour of the belly.
When the excess skin and fat are also in the back and often are the result of massive weight loss, a body lift can be indicated. In a body lift, also the posterior contour is treated with the possibility to lift and augment the buttocks at the same time.
If your weight is stable and you are bothered by the excess skin and fat in the lower abdomen you may be a good candidate for tummy tuck. Usually the fat localized in the lower abdomen is difficult to lose even with exercise in particular when also the abdominal muscles are weakened and the abdomen is bulging out.
It is possible to lift the pubic area and genitals at the same time as the tummy tuck and using the same incision.
At Global Plastic Surgery, you will be considered as a candidate for surgery if you have a positive outlook and realistic goals for what the selected surgery can achieve. If you are a non-smoker or you quit smoking at least 1 month before surgery, results will be better and achieved faster, while if you cannot stop smoking more complications have to be expected and sometimes surgery will be contraindicated.
At Global Plastic Surgery, surgical candidates commit also to healthy lifestyle, proper nutrition and fitness.
Tummy tuck Vs. Liposuction
If you only have excess fat that you cannot shed across the abdomen with a good skin quality then you probably can best profit from a liposuction. When also skin is in excess is and skin elasticity is compromised (stretch marks) then you probably better opt for a tummy tuck to remove this excess tissues in bulk.
The tummy tuck can also correct the bulging out of the abdomen due to a weakened abdominal wall.
Sometimes a mini-tummy tuck, that is a tummy tuck without the transposition of the belly button is the best option, in particular when the excess fat and skin are localized below the belly button.
In some cases your surgeons at Global Plastic Surgery may decide to stage the operations and perform a liposuction in the first stage and tummy tuck with correction of the abdominal wall deformities in a second stage.
The so called “mommy makeover” is a combination of operations aiming to correct the body changes occurring after pregnancy and breastfeeding. A combination of liposuction/tummy tuck and breast lift/augmentation can be in selected cases performed at the same time.
Depending on the amount and localization of the excess skin and fat, a tummy tuck requires often an incision from hip to hip in the area between your belly button and the pubis. The scar required is often long, but is well hidden below the bikini area.
A second incision is required and your navel when there is excess skin also above the umbilicus.
When a body lift is indicated it will usually be staged in a second operation.
In some cases a small, thin tube may be placed under the skin to drain excess fluids or blood that may collect. At Global plastic Surgery all instructions to take care of these tubes will be provided before and after surgery.
The operation is performed under general anesthesia in an outpatient (ambulatory) or hospital setting.
At Global Plastic Surgery, no stiches will need to be removed after surgery. Dressings will be placed on the incision lines during a period of 2-3 weeks. During recovery, at Global plastic Surgery, you will be provided with a special elastic garment for your abdomen to assist your tissues to retract and heal properly. For the first 1-2 weeks you will be recommended not to stand fully upright in order to avoid excessive tension on the healing wounds. Normal work can be started after 1-2 weeks and 4-6 weeks are required for starting sport.
Initially, results may be not obvious due to swelling and inability to stand up fully upright. After about two weeks, results will become more visible and a change in the shape of the abdomen will be obvious.
The tummy tuck will result in a firmer and flatter abdomen, more proportional to your body type and weight. Although the main issue of excessive skin and fat has been addressed, a second surgical operation may be required in order to obtain optimal results.
While the C-section scar can often be integrated in the new tummy tuck scar, previous operations and scars on the abdomen may limit the results of your operation.
At Global Plastic Surgery all possible risks and complications will be extensively discussed with you prior the operation date. After the extensive discussions with your surgeon, you will decide whether the potential risks, benefits and potential complications are acceptable to you.
