Botox for migraines, chronic headaches, depressionIntroBotulinum toxin for migraine headaches represents a very effective treatment for chronic headaches in selected cases.
Clinical studies have shown that Botulinum toxin injections can temporary reduce frequency and intensity of migraine attacks. Some patients even experience complete migraine relief and significant depression improvement from this treatment.
At Global Migraine Surgery, we inject Botulinum toxin for the treatment and diagnosis of migraine headaches.
Why botulinum toxin works for migraine headaches
Botulinum toxin temporarily paralyses the muscles that are injected. Since sensitive nerves in the face and neck pass through these muscles, the irritation on these nerves decreases when the muscle is temporarily inactivated.
Worry lines, crow’s feet and lines between the eyebrows attenuate rapidly and improve our outer appearance and self-image.
Patient with chronic headaches and depression that are refractory to conventional therapies are eligible for botulinum toxin.
At Global Plastic Surgery, you will be considered as a candidate for surgery if you have a positive outlook and realistic goals for what the selected surgery can achieve. If you are a non-smoker or you quit smoking at least 1 month before surgery, results will be more predictable, while if you cannot stop smoking, more complications have to be expected and sometimes surgery will not be possible.
At Global Plastic Surgery, surgical candidates before the operation commit to healthy lifestyle, proper nutrition and fitness.
The injections are performed in the office, usually during the second consultation after a first clinical assessment and extensive discussions. If you have special requirements such as you come from abroad, we can perform the injections of botulinum toxin during the first appointment.
There is basically no down time after the injections of botulinum toxin. Some redness may temporary be noticed in the area of the injections for a few hours after the procedure.
Botulinum toxin to be effective requires from 2 to 4 days. When the toxin is injected in the face, there is a beautification effect as it attenuates the wrinkles caused by the injected muscles.
Results last from 2 to 4 months on average.
When injected in the face, botulinum toxin it can cause some temporary asymmetries, such as in the eyelids, in particular in patients that have already some noticeable differences before the injection.
Migraine Surgery – Chronic headache surgery
Migraine surgery is an approach to decrease the intensity, frequency and duration of uncontrolled chronic headaches.
If your migraine is not under control by drugs and highly affects your quality of life and work performance, you might be a candidate for migraine surgery.
Pain locations that can be treated with migraine surgery includes, frontal (above the eyes), temporal, occipital and behind the eyes.
After a first assessment of your peripheral nervous system and exclusion of other possible sources of intractable pain (such as intra-cerebral masses or vascular problems) a test procedure will be performed to assess your eligibility for surgery. If the results of the tests are positive you will be considered eligible for surgery.
The operation is performed under local or general anesthesia in an outpatient (ambulatory) or hospital setting.
Incisions are hidden in natural creases (such as the upper lid crease) or in the hair bearing zones of the scalp.
Following the operation some swelling and bruising might be visible for a few days. Incision lines will gradually fade away and dissimulate in natural creases or in the scalp. Generally, after a few days (5-7) the signs of the operation become very discreet and can be camouflaged by makeup when needed.
Results, in terms of reduction of pain intensity, frequency and duration are rapidly evident. A first assessment is generally set at the three-month follow up time. Improvement in pain control is permanent.
At Global Plastic Surgery, possible risks and complications will be extensively discussed with you prior the operation date. After the extensive discussions with your surgeon, you will decide whether the potential risks, benefits and potential complications are acceptable to you.
